Autumn Is Here — Time to Refresh Your Hair

As the days grow shorter and the air takes on that familiar crispness, autumn arrives with its gorgeous palette of burnt oranges, deep reds, and warm golden tones. It is also the perfect season to give your hair a little extra love and attention. The change in season brings with it a shift in humidity, temperature, and even the way your hair behaves — and that means your hair care routine deserves a seasonal refresh too.
Whether you are thinking about a new colour, a nourishing treatment, or simply want to update your look to match the season, here are my top tips for keeping your hair healthy, vibrant, and beautifully on-trend this autumn.
Embrace Warm, Rich Tones
Autumn is the season for warmth, and that extends beautifully to hair colour. If you have been rocking a bright, sun-kissed blonde over summer, now is the ideal time to deepen and enrich your colour with warm caramel, honey, and toffee tones. Rich brunettes with golden or copper undertones are absolutely stunning in autumn, and lived-in balayage techniques can give you that effortless, dimensional look that feels perfectly seasonal.
For my clients who love a more dramatic change, deep auburn and chocolate brown shades are having a real moment right now. These colours photograph beautifully in the warm autumn light and complement the season's fashion tones perfectly.
Repair Summer Damage Before It Gets Worse
Summer can be tough on your hair. Between the UV exposure, salt water, chlorine, and heat styling, many of us arrive at autumn with hair that is drier, more brittle, and in need of some serious TLC. The cooler months are the ideal time to focus on repair and restoration before the dryness of winter sets in.
My top tip: Book in a deep conditioning treatment alongside your colour appointment. In-salon treatments like bond builders and protein masks can make a dramatic difference in the texture and strength of your hair. At home, swap your regular conditioner for a weekly intensive mask and apply it from mid-lengths to ends — this is where the most damage tends to accumulate.
Update Your Cut for the Season
Autumn is a wonderful time to reassess your haircut. Many of my clients love to go slightly longer in the cooler months — longer layers that can be worn down for warmth, or easily swept up when needed. If you have been growing out a style over summer, now is the perfect time for a tidy-up that removes the dry, split ends while preserving your length.
For those who prefer shorter styles, a fresh cut going into autumn feels incredibly satisfying. A well-executed bob or lob (long bob) with a little texture and movement is endlessly versatile and looks gorgeous with autumn's cosy wardrobe staples.
Adjust Your Hair Care Routine
Just as you swap out your skincare for richer, more hydrating products in cooler weather, your hair care routine should follow suit. Here are a few simple adjustments to make:
Switch to a moisturising shampoo and conditioner. Cooler air and indoor heating can both strip moisture from your hair. Look for products that contain nourishing ingredients like argan oil, keratin, or vitamin-enriched formulas — like the Level Up Vitamin Duo from Unwritten Hair, which I stock in my online shop.
Add a serum or treatment spray to your routine. A lightweight hydrating serum applied to damp hair before blow-drying will smooth the cuticle, reduce frizz, and add beautiful shine. The So Sublime Hydro Repair Serum is one of my absolute favourites for this.
Reduce heat styling where you can. Embrace your natural texture a little more in autumn. Air drying with a good leave-in treatment can give you beautiful, effortless waves or curls without the added heat damage.
Protect Your Colour
If you have recently had a colour service, protecting your investment through the season is essential. Colour-protecting shampoos and conditioners — like the Joico K-PAK Color Therapy range — are formulated specifically to lock in colour molecules and prevent fading. Paired with a UV-protecting spray on those sunny autumn days, your colour will stay vibrant for much longer between appointments.
I always recommend washing colour-treated hair in cool or lukewarm water rather than hot water, as heat opens the hair cuticle and allows colour to escape more quickly. It is a small change that makes a surprisingly big difference.
